Global Circus of Niigata University
Niigata University starts a new project providing a higher education in graduate schools due to Global Circus, that is, an international network between the universities. In Global Circus, graduate students of Niigata University are studying, researching and exchanging ideas of their researches with foreign students that are supervised by professors of Niigata University and foreign universities. Research Camp, which is one of the Global Circus projects, invites two active professors from Chemistry Department, College of Science and Mathematics, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology in the Republic of the Philippines, which is a sister University of Graduate School of Science & Technology, Niigata University.

Institute of Technology, Philippines: An Overview Natural Products: Trapping Nature's Bounty |

| A profile of the Chemistry Department of the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology will be presented with emphasis on its degree programs and research activities. Natural products are everywhere- in food, fuel, clothing, cars, medicines, among others. These secondary metabolites have made life worthwhile. I will present my study on the secondary metabolites of the marine sponge Geodia exigua which I did for my dissertation at Hiroshima University. My current work on Philippine medicinal trees and marine sponges will also be presented. |

| Structures of Compounds Formed by Inclusion of Rare Gas (Rg = Ar, or Kr) Atom into Some Amino Acids: Exploring the pathway of bio-rare gas chemistry | |
| Theoretical studies on different chemical compounds played a vital role in the interpretation and understanding of the nature of bonding in such unusual compounds like rare gas compounds. Some of these compounds were first predicted by theoretical calculations, which assisted their experimental identification. In an attempt to determine potential rare gas compounds, I will present my on-going study which explores the possibility of insertion of rare gas atom (Ar or Kr) into different sites of some amino acids using ab initio and density functional theory (DFT) methods. Visualization and vibrational analysis of the equilibrium structures of these rare gas insertion compounds will also be reported. |
